RefManager class in cmangos code

I notice both cmangos or mangos use a very special design to represent the reference of player and the map it was located, that is RefManager. Basically it is a linklist. Designed like this has any advantages?
Why not just simply write as:
class Map {
std::list<Player*> _players;
};

I don't know this kind of topic suitable for this forum, but I see this is developer's corner so I ask this question, hope reply.
